Vesa Nissinen

ISSF Academy Director

Vesa Nissinen (b.1963) is a Finnish leadership professional and sport activist. Combination of practical military pedagogy and academic educational research is the basis of numerous large-scale training and coaching programmes Vesa has planned and executed during his multi-path career. He is the author of 10 books and entrepreneur in many companies. Finnish Shooting Sport Federation selected Vesa in 2017 to be their President due to him being a national champion and coach in rifle shooting with wide managerial experience.

Nektarios Stavrou

Research Director

Nektarios Stavrou is an Associate Professor of Sport Psychology & Motor Behavior (Faculty of Physical Education & Sport Science, University of Athens). He has BSc in Psychology, BSc in Exercise and Sport Science, PhD in Sport Psychology. He also has Post-doc in Exercise & Sport Psychology. He has over 50 publications on peer-review journals and book-chapters. He has more than 20 years applied experience, being the sport psychologist of Hellenic Olympic Team in Olympic Games Athens 2004, London 2012, Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024. He was the Director of the Sport Psychology Lab at the Hellenic Sport Research Institute (2010-2024).

Karoliina Nissinen

Head of Administration

Karoliina is the CEO of ISSF Academy where she is committed to advancing education across all areas of international shooting sports. She has years of experience leading HR and financial operations, in particular within the justice and defense sectors where she’s managed demand planning, development and transformation processes. For Karoliina shooting is more than a hobby – it’s a true passion that shapes her professional and personal life. Her vision is to build ISSF Academy into an open and inclusivev community that brings together the entire shooting sport family. Additionally she leads the development of the WISE network (Women in Shooting sport Education) which aims to strengthen the role of women in shooting sport education and coaching by providing space, support and new opportunitites for growth and impact.

Kati Niemelä

Head of Growth

Kati is a marketing and business professional and now Head of Growth in the Academy. She has years of experience in building digital businesses and brands. She hopes to make the ISSF Academy brand known around the shooting sport world and for it to be the place to be when one wants to grow as a coach.

Henna Viljanen

Coordinator

Henna is experienced in the field of sports and fitness industry as an athlete. She’s also a sports director and a manager of a sports club. She is part of the international shooting family. Henna has been part of the ISSF World Cup circuit since 2018 as a rifle shooter, which she will continue this towards the 2028 Olympics. Henna is excited about helping to develop the academy coaching courses. She will bring a valued perspectives as an active athlete.

Meri Vuorijärvi

Assistant

Meri is an international business student with a growing passion for the shooting sports, which she has been a part of since 2022. At ISSF Academy, Meri plays a valuable role on our marketing team and supports day-to-day operations from customer service to key projects. She loves the spirit of the shooting sport community and says there’s nothing quite like it.

Anton Belak (SVK)

Rifle Instructor

Anton Belak (b.1961) is a Slovak professional shooting coach, ISSF A coach. He has been shooting for over 50 years. He has been working as a professional trainer for more than 38 years. He is the only coach in the world whose athletes won the ISSF Shooter of the Year title 3 times. As a coach, he participated in 4 Olympic Games. He helped his athletes win Olympic medals, many titles and medals at the World Championships in individual and team competitions, and countless victories and medals at the WC Final, World Cups, European, Asian and Arab Championships. He worked as a national coach in Slovakia, Switzerland, Kazakhstan and Kuwait. He founded the website shootingcoach.online. In recent years, he has been dedicated to live online training of athletes and online training of coaches.

Robert Päkk

Head of Sports Psychology team

Robert Päkk, M.Sc., is a dual master’s graduate from the University of Jyväskylä’s Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences in Finland. Currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Jyväskylä’s School of Business and Economics, Robert serves as the Leading Advisor in Mental Coaching for the Finnish Olympic Committee. In this role, he has been responsible for sport psychology at the Tokyo 2020, Beijing 2022, and Paris 2024 Olympics. With over a decade of international experience in sport psychology, Robert has focused his research on affect and emotions and their connection to performance. He has worked extensively with athletes across various disciplines, particularly in shooting sports, including shotgun and pistol, as well as sailing, cross-country skiing, and track and field. Additionally, he leads the ISSF Academy Sport Psychology Team.

Jack Bale

Skill acquisition specialist

Jack Bale is a former Team GB rifle shooter who competed internationally for several years and now specializes in skill acquisition within the ecological dynamics framework. Based in Australia, he is completing his PhD on the effects of task ambiguity and representative constraints on combat shooting performance. Jack applies his expertise to high-performance shooting, serving as the head ISSF rifle coach for Victoria State and consulting for Shooting Australia. HIs academic interest in ISSF shooting has led to published research with further work in progress. Holding a master’s degree in strength and conditioning coaching and a bachelor’s (Hons) in sports and exercise science, Jack bridges academic research and applied practice, advancing evidence-based training methods in shooting sports.

James Galea

Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon

James Galea is a qualified Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon with interest in the health management aspects of athletes. Following a short career as a shotgun athlete with the Maltese National team, his sport career has since focused on coaching athletes in a holistic way. In 2017 he founded the elite shooting academy where different coaches (technical, mental, physical and health) are regularly invited to further the experience of training the athletes involved in the academy. His main focus now is the holistic health of shooting athletes and helping coaches achieving the full potential of their athletes maintaining the mental and physical wellbeing.

Janaina Fogaca

Certified mental performance consultant

Jana Fogaca is an Associate Professor in the Kinesiology Department at California State University, Long Beach. She received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from the Federal University of RS (Brazil). She also has two master’s degrees, one in Sport and Exercise Psychology from University of Jyväskylä (Finland) and one in Counseling from West Virginia University, where she also completed her PhD in Sport and Exercise Psychology. Her research interests include professional development in sport psychology, applied sport psychology, and weight stigma. She is a Certified Mental Performance Consultant through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, and has experience working with multiple sports at various levels.

Paul Hughes

Sport Psychologist

Paul Hughes HCPC CPsychol is a UK-based Sport Psychologist. He worked with his first shooter (Air Pistol) in 2008 and has worked exclusively in shooting sports since 2014. Paul led a team of Sport Psychologists for the GBR Olympic & Paralympic World Class Programmes 2014-2022. He attended and supported GBR shooters/coaches at 1 Paralympics and 3 Olympic Games (Rio, Tokyo and Paris). The focus was on developing a high-performance culture and assisting shooters and coaches in performing under pressure. Paul has worked as on independent Sport Psychologist in shooting since 2022, delivering his sport psychology method to shooters via his Shooting Mindset Academy online platform. He continues to support elite shooters 1:1 in pursuit of success at LA 2028 and beyond.

Tommi Pärmäkoski

Head of Physical Training

Tommi holds a BSc, majoring in Exercise Physiology. He is working as High-Performance Manager at Finnish Olympic Committee, with a strong background working in elite level sports as a strength and conditioning coach gaining diverse experience in elite level sports throughout his interesting career. Tommi has been involved in coaching and mentoring teams behind Olympic athletes and Olympic/World Championships. And he has worked as a performance coach for Sebastian Vettel (former F1 4-time World Champion), strength and conditioning coach for Team Finland in volleyball and as coach for two different Finnish premier league elite level hockey teams.
